Wildfire mitigation

Lowering risk of wildfires associated with the electric grid. Our solutions are helping utilities fortify electric distribution systems everywhere – across wide areas, supporting undergrounding efforts and with long-term R&D investments.

Wildfire mitigation through grid hardening

Utilities throughout North America are strengthening their distribution systems to minimize the risk of wildfires. Our technology and expertise is at the heart of the strategies making a difference – whether its reducing risk in overhead systems, advancing undergrounding initiatives, delivering new intelligence or enabling novel tools with substantive R&D efforts. And we’re making steady investments in our North American manufacturing to meet growing demand for our solutions.

UltraSIL fire protection arrester system

Rapidly fortifying the grid with site-ready technologies

Upgrade or replace widely used equipment in overhead distribution systems to substantively reduce wildfire risks, without needing to rework or rebuild infrastructure. Our site-ready solutions include fuses, arresters, capacitors and transformers that are compliant and tested in accordance with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). Breakout technologies like our ELF current-limiting fuses reduce the risk of a sparking incident, while our innovative UltraSIL fire protection arrester system dramatically reduces the occurrence of electrical runaway. Undergrounding powerlines in high-risk areas

Keep the power on, avoid the need for preemptive power outages and protect electric systems extreme weather events. Our technologies are vital to support undergrounding strategies—and include nearly all the equipment required: cable accessories, line installation and protective equipment, regulators, transformers, switchgear, capacitors and more. Plus, our loadbreak connector system enables utilities to sectionalize underground systems, supporting safe maintenance activities while keeping the power on for as many customers as possible. Enabling new technologies to dramatically reduce wildfire risk

Novel tools to fortify the grid and lower risks associated with the grid itself are vital as extreme weather conditions become more common. We have a long history of developing and testing pioneering technologies alongside industry partners from utilities, government agencies, national laboratories and universities. And we’re continuing to invest in research and development to commercialize new solutions to fortify and modernize the grid. Visit the Utility knowledge center.
